Honed Tube for Aerial Work Platform Cylinders: Safety-Critical Precision

An aerial work platform manufacturer once asked us why a competitor’s lift cylinder specification called for a tighter bore tolerance and a lower surface roughness than the mining and construction cylinders we supply for far higher-load equipment. The honest answer was not that the AWP cylinder carries more force. It carries less. What it carries is a person, standing on a platform many meters in the air, and the cylinder’s behavior at every point in its stroke, not just its ultimate strength, is a safety question. A boom lift or scissor lift cylinder that creeps, jerks, or drifts is not a maintenance inconvenience. It is a fall hazard.

This article is for engineers and procurement staff at aerial work platform and access equipment manufacturers, and it explains why AWP lift and boom cylinders demand a specific combination of honed tube properties that differs from general heavy-duty hydraulics, even though the loads involved are often modest by industrial standards.

Why AWP Duty Is Defined by Control, Not Load

A scissor lift or boom lift cylinder rarely approaches the pressure or force levels seen in mining or construction equipment of similar physical size. What defines its duty instead is the requirement for smooth, predictable, drift-free motion under a load, a person, that cannot tolerate a sudden jerk, an uncontrolled descent, or unexpected creep while stationary at height. Standards bodies and machine designers treat this as a functional safety requirement, which is why the bore and seal system on these cylinders is specified more like a precision instrument than a load-bearing strut.

This changes what matters in the honed tube. Roundness and consistent bore diameter along the length govern how evenly the seal compresses throughout the stroke, and any variation shows up as uneven friction, which the operator feels as a jerky or inconsistent platform motion. A bore that would be entirely acceptable on a loader cylinder, passing its diameter tolerance with some ovality or longitudinal variation, can produce motion quality that fails an AWP customer’s functional test even though it never leaks.

Internal Leakage and Platform Drift

For a platform holding position at height, internal leakage past the piston seal translates directly into platform drift, a slow, unintended descent while the operator believes the lift is stationary. This makes bore finish and roundness a leakage-control issue as much as a friction issue. A bore with good roundness and a consistent, well-controlled honed finish lets the piston seal maintain even contact pressure all the way around, minimizing the small internal bypass that shows up over time as drift.

Because platform holding is often assessed against a maximum allowable drift rate over a defined time, cylinder builders for this sector frequently specify tighter roundness and finish control than the raw pressure rating alone would suggest. Communicating that the cylinder is safety-critical AWP duty, rather than general lift duty, lets a honed tube supplier apply the right level of process control rather than a generic specification.

Straightness Across Multi-Section Booms

Many boom lifts use multiple cylinder sections, sometimes telescopic, working together to extend a boom over a long reach. Straightness in each honed tube section matters not only for seal life but for the geometric accuracy of the whole boom, since a slight bow in one section compounds with the others across the extended reach. For long-reach boom lifts, straightness tolerance over both the total length and shorter local sections should be specified explicitly, following the same principle discussed for crane and lifting cylinders, but applied to a structure where operator confidence in smooth, predictable extension is part of the product’s safety case.

Surface Finish and Low-Friction Seal Compatibility

AWP cylinders commonly use low-friction seal designs, sometimes PTFE-based, specifically to eliminate the stick-slip motion that a heavier elastomeric seal package can introduce at the low speeds typical of lift operation. As with any PTFE seal application, the bore finish must be tuned to support the seal rather than starve or abrade it, meaning a controlled plateau-honed cross-hatch appropriate to the seal type is part of getting smooth, jerk-free motion rather than an afterthought.

Corrosion Considerations for Outdoor Access Equipment

Aerial work platforms used in construction and rental fleets spend significant time outdoors, exposed to rain and humidity between jobs, and are often stored for periods with the boom partially extended. This exposure profile sits between light indoor duty and full marine service, and it typically justifies standard honed tube with disciplined rust-preventive practice and good sealing, rather than the heavier corrosion measures used in marine or offshore equipment, unless the specific rental market or climate calls for more.

Specifying for the Safety Case, Not Just the Load Chart

The practical lesson for AWP manufacturers and their component suppliers is that a lift cylinder’s specification should be driven by the platform’s motion and drift requirements, not derived by scaling down a construction or mining cylinder of similar force rating. Roundness, longitudinal diameter consistency, straightness across boom sections, and a finish matched to a low-friction seal package together deliver the smooth, predictable, low-drift behavior that the platform’s safety case depends on. A tube supplier who understands this distinction can hold the right properties deliberately rather than defaulting to a general industrial tolerance that happens to pass the drawing.

Specify for the Ride, Not Just the Rating

An aerial work platform cylinder is judged on drift and smoothness with a person on board, not just peak load. Specify roundness, straightness, and finish for that safety case, and the platform performs the way the operator trusts it to.
